Oil Undercoating: The Best Protection Against Rust

Oil undercoating has been around for over a century, initially involving the application of grease and engine oil to outdoor equipment to slow the oxidation process. Times have certainly evolved. Now, we utilize a natural grease found in sheep's wool called lanolin. When extracted and processed, lanolin serves as an excellent rust prevention agent. This greasy substance is a key component of modern oil and wax undercoatings. You can expect these fluid film coatings to remain wet, slowly washing off over time. For maximum protection, some areas will need to be reapplied about once a year. However, spots that rot from the inside out and don’t experience road wash can last almost indefinitely. This technique is known as cavity waxing. Rocker panels, cab corners, and the often problematic rear wheel wells all receive a generous application of our secret sauce, lanolin, also referred to as woolwax.
